Driver CV example

A complete example CV for a driver in South Africa, then the bullets that make it work, rewritten from weaker versions with the reason for each change.

A fictional example. Bongani Zulu is not a real person, and the employers, dates and numbers are made up to show the shape of a good CV. Use your own facts: never copy someone else's.

South African details to get right

  • Licence codes: Code B (old Code 08) covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg; C1 (Code 10) goods vehicles from 3,500 kg to 16,000 kg; EC (Code 14) articulated heavy vehicles over 16,000 kg. Put your code at the top of the CV. Source: gov.za: Apply for a driving licence.
  • Professional drivers of goods vehicles over 3,500 kg, buses and some minibuses need a professional driving permit (PrDP) on top of the licence. Give its category and expiry date. Source: Western Cape Government: Professional driving permit.
  • Leave out your ID number, date of birth, marital status and a photo unless the advert asks for them. Contact details, your area and your work history are enough to be shortlisted.
  • Keep it in one column with plain headings (Profile, Skills, Work experience, Education). Tables, text boxes and two-column templates often confuse the software that reads CVs first.
