The organisation's work contributes to industrial development and supports a capable state. Power System Engineer (Six- month contract) About the job: The CSIR has a vacancy for a Power System Engineer in the Energy Systems and Services Centre within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions cluster. The incumbent will conduct power system research to support the transition from a traditional, high-inertia power system to a future system dominated by inverter-based energy sources, with the goal of maintaining a reliable and secure power system. The role covers power system operations (steady-state, dynamic and real-time digital simulation) and microgrids (design and application studies), and includes translating CSIR energy research into practical, evidence-based recommendations for South African industry and policymakers in support of the energy transition. This position is based in Pretoria. For more info about the cluster, please visit this link: https://www.csir.co.za/healthy-mix-energy-sources-future-energy-south-africa Key responsibilities: Conduct steady-state and dynamic power system studies (load flow, short-circuit, contingency and stability analysis) to assess the impact of increasing levels of inverter-based resources on system reliability and security. Research the technical challenges of low-inertia power systems, including frequency and voltage control, system strength and the role of inverter-based technologies in maintaining system stability. Develop and validate network and dynamic models using power system analysis tools (e.g. DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/E, ETAP, MATLAB). Perform generation integration and grid code compliance studies, with a focus on renewable energy. Undertake real-time digital simulation and hardware-in-the-loop studies. Carry out microgrid design and application studies, including small-scale embedded generation (SSEG). Translate study results into clear technical and policy recommendations for industry and policymakers through CSIR reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at conferences and industry forums. Lead assigned project tasks and technical work packages, managing scope, schedule and quality to meet client expectations. Contribute to research proposals and engage with internal and external stakeholders and clients to develop new opportunities. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and researchers. Qualifications, skills and experience: A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with at least six to ten years relevant experience, including at least six years in electrical power system planning and/or operations at transmission, sub-transmission and/or distribution voltage levels. A Professional registration with an applicable professional body. Proven experience in power system modelling and analysis using tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/E, ETAP or MATLAB. Experience in steady-state and dynamic studies related to generation integration and grid code compliance, with a focus on renewable energy. Understanding of grid codes, energy policy and regulation; knowledge of South African codes and policies is beneficial. Understanding of real-time digital simulation and hardware-in-the-loop applications. Understanding of power system economics and the linkages between energy planning and power system planning. Track record of published research or conference papers in power systems or energy-related fields, and experience presenting at conferences or industry forums. Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team and provide scientific leadership. Ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and clients. Advantageous: Expert understanding of the South African power system and its challenges. Experience in microgrid modelling and design and understanding of small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) applications. Knowledge of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). What's in it for you? The CSIR offers: Learning and development opportunities. Competitive, market-related remuneration packages.
